The Hand That Feeds

A quick little story about this logo.

Ethan Muntjac was a character from the early Days of the Bedlam strip.

He was a cute little guy that was bent on revolution. A freedom fighter whose story was never fully rounded out. He’d just pop up from time to time and got increasingly darker in both look and demeanor as time went on. So I guess his story not developing fully before our eyes kinda worked. He operated like a ninja anyway. I even took a chunk out of his ear to give him some street cred.

The name Ethan Muntjac was of course a play on the Mission Impossible character Ethan Hunt. Not so subtly referenced in the title of the strip where he first appeared.

Muntjacs ane a tiny deer species native to south-southeast Asia. We had a few at the zoo I worked at and would never have suspected one to be a covert operative.

Anyway. Ethan was a character to call to do the dirty work.

At some point I decided the revolution needed a name and a logo. “The Hand That Feeds” was born. For the logo I wanted something simple. I based it stylistically on Art Spiegelman’s MAUS art. And I hope it was a fitting tribute as that book and it’s follow up Maus II: A Survivor’s Tale remain favorites.

I gotta figure out a way to bring Ethan and his logo back in Bedlam 3.0. Hell, we may even sell shirts and hats.
