Dinner Time!

Everyone has to eat. Even the young Chupacabras. So, yeah. That is what Chupie is.

This little guy was initially meant to be a character in a story arc of my BEDLAM comic strip. I may dig those notes up and rewrite it someday. What I wanted was something more cartoony. Not very menacing but hinting at being a potential problem. It helped that one of the main characters is a goat. I have a sheet of rough drafts of this guy. My aim was something Matt Groening-esque. I had his HELL books long before I knew the Simpsons and they were great for warping my pre teen mind. Just when it is needed most.

For whatever reason it never came about. And occasionally I would come across this sheet in my files and think what a great character to develop someday. Then file it back away.

Then, a few years ago NFT’s became all the rage. I started to dabble a bit. Not too deeply. Just to get my feet wet to learn what this business was all about. So I scribbled out some Chupie sketches and scanned them. A little photoshop fixing and coloring later and I was ready to mint my first NFT’s. Little did I know how expensive that was on any Etherium based platform. So I went with the Tezos. They are still floating around out there somewhere.

I wanted to do something a little more creepy for Halloween. All the linework was done in pencil then scanned, partially assembled, cleaned up then colored in Photoshop.

As a result this image only exists as a print.

Let’s show you some of my process:

Pencil or ballpoint pen scribbles occur. You never know which lines will be the right ones so you chuck ’em all out there. Mainly I use standard 8.5 x 11 copy paper.

When I feel we got a good base to work off I get some tracing paper (not always) and collect some of my favorite lines.

Because this was scanned to be digitally colored I fixed some pieces up individually so I could piece them together in photoshop.

I liked the original sketch background better but this was what worked in the end.

A little color on many photoshop layers later…

And there you have it. I’m not fixing anything now.

5″ x 7.” Giclee prints available.
